Portsmouth Spinnaker Tower

We all had a fantastic time in Portsmouth last Saturday exploring the Historic Dockyard and Spinnaker Tower.

We drove to Portsmouth and parked in the Historic Dockyard Car Park, which cost us £8 for 8 hours which I think is reasonable.

The Spinnaker Tower has become Portsmouth’s most prominent landmark. Visible beyond 23 miles away are incredible views from the sandy beaches of the Witterings, Selsey Bill in the East to the countryside of the New Forest in the West, from the picturesque Isle of Wight in the South to the rolling hills of Hampshire’s South Downs in the North.

Spinnaker Tower is an astonishing 170 meters high, the spire alone is 27 meters tall. There are 3 viewing platforms positioned at 100,105 and 110 metres high. Each having floor to ceiling glass walls offering 350 degrees offering panoramic views of the city, harbour, sea and coastline.

When we arrived at the Spinnaker Tower staff were very welcoming. We didn’t have to wait long once we arrived, we were whisked up the internal lift, reaching viewing deck one within 28 seconds. There is a host in the lift with you who tells you what you will find on each floor.

As soon as you step out of the lift onto Viewing Deck 1 you are 100 metres high. You will be amazed by the spectacular views, we were taken back.

Something which we all loved on Viewing Deck 1 was the ‘Sky Walk’ which can be used by all ages. There lies a glass floor that enables you to literally ‘walk on air.’ The girls loved this being the little daredevils that they are, they didn’t want to leave. The girls would lay on their fronts looking down too, I don’t think they are scared of anything.

Me and Ali enjoyed the ‘walk on air’ experience too. It was a great feeling walking across glass floor 100 meters above sea level. We certainly did test our bravery!

To get to Viewing Deck 2 we walked up a small set of stairs, where we are now 105 metres high. Viewing Deck 2 is home to ‘cafe in the clouds’ offering hot, cold drinks and cakes, whilst taking in more stunning views.  They also have newspapers for you to look at from 1944 which was very interesting. We stayed for a drink and cake whilst watching the boats sail pass, which the girls loved.

Taking a few more steps up to Viewing Deck 3 which is ‘The Sky Deck.’ You are now at the highest viewing platform at 110 metres high. You can really let your hair down and enjoy the views. ‘Talking Telescopes’ are available (additional charge applies) for even longer-distance viewing. The girls really enjoyed this, the views are simply beautiful!

After looking at the amazing sites surrounding you, you will be whisked down the lift where you can continue to the Tower Waterfront Cafe. This is where you can experience a unique waterfront experience.

We had an absolutely amazing time here and we will be going back this year. Isabelle really wants to come back and do the ‘Sky Walk’ again and so does Scarlett, actually we all do.
